Basic Admissions Information

Admissions Term Fall quarter admission only.
GRE GRE general test required.
GRE Subject Test GRE subject test not required.
TOEFL or IELTS Exam The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is required for international applicants whose native language is not English and who have not studied full-time for one uninterruped year at a university-level institution in a country where English is the official language.
Letters of Recommendation Three (3) letters of recommendation required. Letters are required to be submitted ONLINE. No paper letters accepted.
Statement of Purpose Requirements

Prefers online statement of purpose. 1500 word limit.

Specific Program Requirements *Masters degree may be awarded to PS75 students after fulfillment of the appropriate requirements.

Notes Political Science is a Ph.D. offered solely by the Department of Political Science. This program offers study in four areas of the discipline: American politics, comparative politics, international relations, and political theory.

Notes Political Science and International Affairs is an interdisciplinary program offered jointly by the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies and the Department of Political Science.This program combines the analytical skills of political science with political economy, institutional analysis, policy analysis (especially economic policy) and regional training, with special attention to East Asia and/or Latin America.

The Joint Political Science Ph.D. program is small and extremely selective. Applicants not meeting the minimum qualifications will need to show substantial strengths in other areas to be considered for admission.

Carefully evaluate your qualifications against these criteria before paying the application fee and submitting your application. It is highly unlikely that applicants will be offered admission if they do not meet these minimum criteria. Applicants cannot substitute another standardized test for the GRE.
