The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is required for international applicants whose native language is not English and who have not studied full-time for one uninterruped year at a university-level institution in a country where English is the official language. |
| Letters of Recommendation |
3 At least one must be from someone who has taught you and who can attest to your academic ability and research potential. Online letters are highly preferred. |
| Statement of Purpose Requirements |
Prefer the on-line Statement of Purpose. 2500 word limit.
1. State in what areas of research you are interested in and with which faculty you would like to work with and why.
2. Discuss why you are interested in these areas and how your experiences (academic or otherwise) are relevant to your continuing academic studies. Include any research experience or publications you have.
3. Discuss your career goals after obtaining your Ph.D. |

While there are no minimum requirements for the GRE or GMAT exams, most successful applicants score in the 80-90th percentile.
The Department does not enroll students who seek a Masters degree as a terminal degree.
A bachelor's degree is the only degree required for the UCSD Rady Doctoral Program; previous graduate work or completion of an MBA is not required.
