Application requirements for sophomores, juniors, and seniors
IMSD Scholars will be selected on a competitive basis. You are eligible to apply if you fulfill the following requirements:
  1. Are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  2. Are from a disadvantaged social or economic background, have a disability, or are from a minority group that is under-represented in science (African American, Mexican American, Latino, American Indian or Native Alaskan, or Native Pacific Islander, including Filipino, Hawaiian, American Samoan, and Guamanian)
  3. Are interested in graduate study (obtaining a Ph.D.) and research in the biomedical sciences or related areas
  4. Are enrolled as a Biology, Bioengineering, Chemistry/Biochemistry, or Biophysics major (sophomore and transfer students are temporarily exempt)
  5. Have a minimum 3.0 GPA (exceptions made for special circumstances)
To be a successful applicant, you must also demonstrate the following:
  1. You have successfully overcome significant educational, social, cultural, or economic disadvantages or adversity in a way that displays persistence, determination, hard work, and resourcefulness. This might include the absence of a role model, absence of immediate family member who received a bachelor’s degree, graduation from a low performing high school with limited offerings, or family financial needs and economic hardship that required you to work during high school to support the family or save money for college.
  2. You have a commitment and strong potential to succeed at UCSD.
  3. You have outstanding potential for leadership.
Application Deadline
The IMSD program has no application deadline. We accept applications throughout the year and evaluate them as space becomes available.
Application Procedure
A complete IMSD Scholars Program application includes all of the following:
  1. A completed and signed application form
  2. A personal essay (no more than one typed page)
  3. A printout of your current Financial Aid standing from StudentLink

Application for Basic Methodology Training Laboratory (BMTL)
The selection of participants in the BMTL is on a competitive basis. You are elgible to apply if you meet the following requirements:
  1. Are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  2. Are from a disadvantaged social or economic background, have a disability, or are from a minority group that is under-represented in science (African American, Mexican American, Latino, American Indian or Native Alaskan, or Native Pacific Islander, including Filipino, Hawaiian, American Samoan, and Guamanian)
  3. Are interested in graduate study (obtaining a Ph.D.) and research in the biomedical sciences or related areas
  4. Have no previous research experience (freshman, sophomore, and transfer students)
To be a successful applicant, you must also demonstrate the following:
  1. You have successfully overcome significant educational, social, cultural, or economic disadvantages or adversity in a way that displays persistence, determination, hard work, and resourcefulness. This might include the absence of a role model, absence of immediate family member who received a bachelor’s degree, graduation from a low performing high school with limited offerings, or family financial needs and economic hardship that required you to work during high school to support the family or save money for college.
  2. You have a commitment and strong potential to succeed at UCSD.
  3. You have outstanding potential for leadership.
Candidates that succeed at the BMTL should apply to the IMSD regular program to join a research mentor laboratory.
Application Deadline
The BMTL has two training periods: Fall and Spring. Applications should be received before October 1 or March 1.
